Overview

This year’s Multidisciplinary Pelvic Health course will be focused on function, with an emphasis on metrics for measuring patient symptoms such as incontinence and constipation, while providing diagnostic and treatment algorithms for functional disorders of the pelvic floor. It will also include special sections on multidisciplinary pelvic pain management and neuromodulation.

Our faculty includes Virginia Mason clinicians with expertise in functional pelvic floor disorders across the breadth of care in our system. Our invited Grand Rounds speaker is Leah Millheiser, MD, from Stanford University School of Medicine, who will share her vast knowledge in female sexual health.

In addition, it will review national standards for testing and diagnosis, including important screening done by primary care providers, current evidence on best surgical and non-surgical care and clinical trials and initiatives at Virginia Mason. Interactive case and panel discussions amongst the faculty and the audience will also serve to illustrate the level of multidisciplinary care offered for pelvic floor disorders in our system.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, case presentation and panel discussions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe risk factors and manifestations of sexual dysfunction in women
  2. Discuss the basic anatomy and physiology in assessment of defecation-related constipation disorders
  3. Explain surgical approaches to obstructed defecation
  4. Outline dietary and medication management of fecal incontinence
  5. Identify the the role of Interstim therapy for fecal incontinence
  6. Describe escalation medical therapy for stress and urgency incontinence
  7. Review contemporary treatment options for women with urinary incontinence
  8. Identify the three third line options for the treatment and management of urge urinary incontinence
  9. Identify the close association of gynecologic pain conditions with incontinence and constipation
  10. Discuss shared decision-making regarding oophorectomy vs ovarian conservation
  11. Summarize surgical management options for fibroids, focusing on uterine-sparing procedures
  12. Review indications for transvaginal gynecologic surgery
