This 6th Update in Inflammatory Bowel Disease course will review new and forthcoming medical and surgical therapeutic approaches in IBD and its associated manifestations, as well as current standards of practice in IBD management.  The course will explore optimization of medical therapy in patients including immunomodulator, biologic, and combination therapy. It will also cover novel therapies including the advent of biosimilar drugs and their impact in the management of IBD patients. Topics will also cover surgical aspects, neoplasia detection and management in patients with Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis including some controversial aspects of current practice.

Teaching methods include lecture, case presentation and question-and-answer sessions with faculty.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review current guidelines for the management of ulcerative colitis
  2. Summarize the evidence on current biologic drugs in IBD
  3. Review treatment approaches using immunomodulators
  4. Discuss the evidence on the efficacy and safety of biologic monotherapy in IBD
  5. Review the evidence on the efficacy and safety of combination therapy in IBD
  6. Plan targets of medical therapy in IBD and specify how to achieve and adjust them
  7. Relate the evidence on the efficacy and safety of dietary modification and diet therapy in IBD
  8. Assess different approaches to IBD complications
  9. Apply current algorithms in the management of Crohn’s disease
  10. Summarize the steps to undertake to develop an IBD center in private practice
  11. Detect complications that can develop after colectomy for ulcerative colitis
  12. Discuss surgical approaches for perianal Crohn’s disease

The Virginia Mason Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Virginia Mason Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6.5 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
