The 7th Update in Inflammatory Bowel Disease course will review new and forthcoming medical and surgical therapeutic approaches in IBD and its associated manifestations, as well their impact on the current management of these conditions. The therapeutic landscape in IBD is changing very fast, resulting in rapid and dramatic changes to therapeutic algorithms and disease monitoring. The course will review the impact of positioning new therapeutics, optimization of medical therapy, disease management in pregnancy, alternative therapeutics and multidisciplinary approaches to complex clinical scenarios including abscesses and fistulas.

It will also cover novel therapies including the advent of biosimilar drugs and their impact in the management of IBD patients.

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Brian Feagan, Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada.


Teaching methods include lecture, panel discussion, audience response, case presentation and question-and-answer with faculty.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Evaluate how personalized medicine will change the management of IBD
  2. Summarize the clinical data on tofacitinib in ulcerative colitis
  3. Summarize the evidence on current biologic therapies for ulcerative colitis
  4. Apply concepts of personalized medicine to clinical practice
  5. Discuss individualized approaches to the management of pregnant patients with IBD
  6. Assess the potential impact of new therapeutic classes in IBD
  7. Evaluate the risk/benefit balance of using cannabis products as therapeutic agents
  8. Compare different approaches to IBD complications through case presentations
  9. Review current IBD clinical trials at Virginia Mason
  10. Discuss strategies to minimize complications related to intra-abdominal abscesses
  11. Summarize elements of the pathological diagnosis of IBD
  12. Review the data on efficacy and safety of different therapeutic classes for perianal fistulas
  13. Discuss surgical approaches for perianal Crohn’s disease
