Presented via online livestream...

Clinicians require specialized education to deliver safe care to an LGBTQI+ patient. While medical schools and residencies added education on care of the diverse LGBTQI+ patient population to their curriculums, many healthcare providers outside of training programs have had little to no exposure to knowledge about critical topics in the care of this population. A growing body of literature highlights the critical need for education showing significant differences both in treatments offered to LGBTQI+ patients and differences in incidence and prevalence of many medical conditions, including substance use, depression, body dysmorphia, and suicide.

This course seeks to provide participants with knowledge on specific aspects of care for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex, and transgender population. Such information includes knowledge of the epidemiology of diseases that afflict these populations, details on medical and surgical treatments for transgender patients, learning how to take a sexual history, and a focus on mental health in LGBTQ patients. We will also provide sessions on taking a sexual history and improving verbal communication with LGBTQI+ patients. The intention is to highlight practice improvement which incorporates critical change elements of use across specialty and group.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, panel discussions, case presentations, and voice of the patient.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss risks and benefits of hormone therapy and address the role of the mental health evaluation
  2. Address risks and benefits of facial plastic surgery in transgender populations
  3. Review differences in disease prevalence and incidence in transgender populations, including risk of mental health disorders and cardiovascular disease
  4. Discuss barriers to transgender medical care from the patient’s perspective, including insurance considerations
  5. Identify common challenges in verbal communication for providers with LGBTQI+ patients
  6. Discuss research behind Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and frequency of follow-up and testing considerations for sexually-transmitted infections
  7. Identify trends in STIs (especially among the LGBTQI+ community) and therapies — especially in light of developing resistance
  8. Address challenges in taking a thorough sexual history in patients in the primary care setting

Registration

The course will be held via livestream presentation.

Tuition $185.00

Online registration will be open through Wednesday, October 28, 2020. For registration assistance, contact the CME department at 206.341.0142 or email [email protected].
