Overview

This course will focus on the impact of aging on lung symptoms and disease. Topics include the workup of cough and dyspnea in the elderly — addressing both pulmonary and cardiac etiologies — as well as specific lung pathologies including pneumonia, COPD, asthma, lung cancer and interstitial lung disease in this age group. We will examine “normal lung aging” and present the latest evidence on the impact of both indoor and outdoor air quality on lung health. Important considerations for oxygen and noninvasive ventilation will be addressed as well as risks and benefits of different lung surgeries for this age group. Sessions will be didactic but interactive with case reviews. A special session reviewing the benefits of “engaging with aging” will be presented.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Apply the Geriatrics 5Ms framework to care for older adults with chronic conditions, including respiratory diseases.
  2. Recognize common causes of dyspnea and exercise tolerance in the elderly.
  3. Describe the difference between heart failure and diastolic dysfunction.
  4. Review the causes of cough in older populations and treatment considerations for older patients with chronic cough.
  5. Review the different types and causes of pneumonia in the elderly.
  6. Cite the risk factors for aspiration pneumonia.
  7. Consider how patients differ in approach to and style of engaging with aging.
  8. Recommend interventions that can help patients in time of worsened air quality.
  9. Recognize how asthma presents in elderly patients.
  10. Distinguish how COPD presents in geriatric patients.
  11. Review lung cancer treatment considerations specific to the elderly patient.
  12. Summarize the benefits and risks of surgery in the aging patient population.
