Overview

LGBTQIA+ Care for the Primary Care Provider offers a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of LGBTQIA+ medicine. As the population identifying as LGBTQIA+ continues to grow, particularly in regions like Seattle and Tacoma, the need for informed, inclusive, and evidence-based care has never been more urgent. While medical education has historically provided limited exposure to these critical topics, this course is designed to bridge the knowledge gap, empowering clinicians to move beyond basic awareness toward high-quality, specialized management of this patient population.

Through expert-led didactic sessions, interactive panel discussions, and nuanced case presentations, participants will gain practical strategies for:

  • Gender-Affirming Care: Reviewing the essential medical and surgical needs of transgender and gender-nonconforming patients, including evidence-based approaches to hormone therapy and pediatric care.

  • Preventative Health & Sexual Wellness: Mastering the latest updates in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including appropriate laboratory monitoring and the management of sexually transmitted infections.

  • Comprehensive HIV Management: Building clinical confidence in the primary care management of HIV-positive patients, including a functional understanding of modern anti-retroviral therapy (ART) classes.

  • Addressing Health Disparities: Identifying the social and systemic determinants of health that contribute to disparities in mental and physical outcomes, and implementing strategies to foster an inclusive clinical environment.

This activity is intended for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and the wider healthcare team seeking to provide equitable, patient-centered care. By bridging the gap between general clinical practice and the specific needs of the LGBTQIA+ community, this course provides the tools necessary to confidently navigate medical histories, routine screenings, and complex longitudinal care. Attendees will engage with faculty through real-time interactive Q&A, ensuring that clinical questions are addressed with the depth and sensitivity required for today’s inclusive medical practice.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate strategies for responding with humility and vulnerability in microaggression incidents
  2. Discuss the multitude of online resources advertised to patients regarding improving sexual performance
  3. Review new long term injectable HIV PREP strategies
  4. Outline the latest clinical guidelines for HIV screening, diagnosis, and routine monitoring in the primary care setting
  5. Review dosing regimens and evaluate current protocols for both feminizing hormone therapy (estrogen, anti-androgens) and masculinizing hormone therapy (testosterone)
  6. Identify appropriate candidates for surgical referral and outline the clinical documentation required to support insurance authorization in Washington
  7. Review surgical options for gender-affirming vulvovaginal construction and phallic construction
