Overview

The Rheumatology 101 for the Primary Care Clinician course provides internists and general practitioners with up-to-date information on rheumatologic disorders and initial treatment considerations, including systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, crystalline arthropathies, Sjogren's disease, and spondyloarthropathies, as well as essential insights into rheumatoid arthritis and giant cell arteritis.

This course will provide participants with a better understanding of how to recognize and diagnose common rheumatologic disorders and determine which patients can be managed in their practices versus which need referral to a specialist.

This daylong course features a Grand Rounds Presentation, a series of interactive lectures by Virginia Mason Franciscan Health rheumatologists, a unique Lunch Panel Discussion, and practical insights from rheumatology nurses and clinical pharmacists, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging educational experience.

Teaching methods include lecture, case presentation, and a panel discussion with patient participants.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review new medications for rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and dermatomyositis
  2. Discuss classification criteria for systemic sclerosis
  3. Outline range of clinical presentations and diagnostic approaches to crystalline arthropathies
  4. Recognize rheumatoid arthritis by the pattern of joint involvement, common joint deformities, laboratory and imaging findings
  5. Review current and future pharmacologic and symptomatic treatment options for Sjogren's
  6. Discuss patient-clinician medical decision-making in management of autoimmune disease
  7. Identify different forms of spondyloarthritis
  8. Explain how to appropriately order lab work-up and imaging for systemic lupus erythematosus
