Overview

Join faculty experts from our Center for Digestive Health for this half-day course on current evidence-based diagnosis and management strategies for gastrointestinal and hepatological diseases. The program was developed to support primary care clinicians, gastroenterologists, and those who treat GI-related conditions.

We will review a range of topics from top to bottom of the GI tract, including upper and GI tract screening, motility disorders, and obesity management. We will address diagnosis and management, the role of the referring provider and when it is time to refer to gastroenterology. This year’s course opens with a review of approaches to managing inflammatory bowel disease and an update on available biologics. Managing obesity will be covered from three perspectives: medical, surgical and endoscopic. We will address management of GI conditions commonly seen in the primary care setting, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diarrhea, bloating, hemorrhoids, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We will conclude with a review of current tests and criteria for upper and lower intestinal cancer screening.

Teaching methods include lecture and Q&A with faculty.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Examine the evidence supporting the positioning of therapeutics for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  2. Review the available medications for obesity management
  3. Discuss the available surgical procedures for obesity management
  4. Recognize how to endoscopically manage complications of surgery
  5. Outline the diagnostic criteria for gastrointestinal gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  6. Define acute and chronic diarrhea
  7. Recognize when to refer a patient with bloating to gastroenterology
  8. Describe the available medical tools for hemorrhoidal management
  9. Discuss which patients should be screened for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
  10. Review screening criteria for gastric intestinal metaplasia
