Overview

Primary care providers and specialists working with perioperative patients are integral to assessing and optimizing patient readiness for surgery. This half-day course is designed to be an engaging and highly practical course tailored to enhance your skills in risk stratification, optimizing comorbidities, and preparing your patients for surgical success.

Goals for this course include:

1. Master Risk Stratification in Preoperative Care
•Shift from "clearing" patients to truly assessing their surgical risk.
•Evaluate the risk of Major Cardiac and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCE) based on patient comorbidities and the type and urgency of surgery.

2. Deepen Your Understanding of Surgical Readiness
•Develop a comprehensive approach to individualizing surgical readiness for each patient.
•Discover key factors affecting comorbid conditions—such as DM2, HTN, CAD, exercise tolerance, asthma/COPD — and their impact on perioperative risk.

3. Enhance Perioperative Orders and Recommendations
•Assess when to use lab tests, diagnostics, and specialty referrals to optimize outcomes.
•Get insights into prehabilitation, smoking cessation protocols, and when to consider tests like NT-pro BNP, EKGs, TTE, TEE, and more.

4. Become a Confident Evaluator of Preoperative Readiness
•Boost your confidence with evidence-based guidelines and a practical preoperative checklist for assessing and documenting surgical readiness.
•Review the latest medical evidence that can directly enhance your perioperative decision-making process.

5. Discover the Future of Perioperative Medicine
•Explore the evolving field of perioperative medicine, emphasizing the benefits of multidisciplinary collaboration for delivering excellent perioperative care.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, and case presentation.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss how the field of preoperative evaluation has evolved over the past few years
  2. Review the anesthesiologist perspective of surgical readiness
  3. Apply a systems-based approach to stratifying a patient’s risk of major cardiac or cerebrovascular events (MACCE) based on the patient’s intrinsic comorbidities and the risks of the proposed surgery
  4. Discuss the effect of perioperative optimization on patient outcomes
  5. Select diagnostic tests relative to patient history
  6. Utilize shared decision making for non-urgent surgery where optimizing patient readiness may improve outcomes
  7. Examine the future directions of perioperative medicine, the potential of the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) to reduce length of stay, improve functional outcomes and lower costs without increasing complications or readmission rates
