Overview

The 17th Annual Topics in Primary Care course will focus on updates on common conditions encountered in primary care. Expert faculty will deliver practical, engaging instruction designed to enhance learning, knowledge retention, and clinical practice change. This hybrid conference offers both in-person and remote learning options, with in-person attendance encouraged to maximize educational value and collegial interaction through interactive audience response and chat features.

Grand Rounds will feature University of Washington nephrologist Dr. Laura Mayeda presenting updated hypertension guidelines relevant to primary care clinicians. Morning sessions will include clinical pearls on menopause management, fall prevention and medication adherence in older adults, updated management of pneumonia and urinary tract infections, emerging data on partner treatment for bacterial vaginosis, and current guidance on the use of SGLT2 inhibitors and finerenone.

The afternoon program begins with two workshop options: choose a presentation by Virginia Mason obesity management specialist Dr. Jackie Lee; or the interactive physical examination workshop led by Dr. Greg Nakamoto.  (In-person attendance is required for Dr. Nakamoto's workshop. All livestream attendees will participate in the obesity management workshop.)

Dr. Soung will then present his annual Primary Care Potpourri, highlighting timely, practice-changing updates.

The conference will conclude with a special screening of Trans Dudes with Lady Cancer: A Short Film Documentary, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers. The film shares the personal story of two transgender masculine individuals diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer in the same month and their experience navigating affirming medical care. (For those who are unable to enroll in this full day course, we also offer the option to enroll in the 90-minute film screening and discussion here.)

Teaching methods include lecture, breakout sessions, Q&A with faculty, audience response system and a short film documentary.

  7. Develop an evidence-based prescribing strategy for GLP-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in diverse patient populations, integrating updated indications, weight loss trajectory data, and patient-specific factors to optimize treatment efficacy
  8. Perform and interpret a systematic, clinically-oriented physical examination of the knee to lead to an accurate orthopedic diagnosis
  9. Discuss cost and efficacy of Fecal Immunochemical Tests and Cologuard for colon cancer screening with patients
  10. Educate healthcare practitioners to socially interact with transgender and gender non-conforming people in an affirming and helpful manner
