Overview

The 2025 Updates in Neurology for Primary Care course brings together multiple subspecialists in neurology to cover a wide range of situations frequently encountered in the primary care setting.  Topics include difficult to manage headache and facial pain syndromes, first-time seizure, multiple sclerosis diagnosis and management, updated guidelines on stroke care, and geropsychiatric care in memory disorders.

Grand rounds will feature Dr. Kimiko Domoto-Reilly from the Memory and Brain Wellness Center at Harborview addressing recent advances in dementia management and care. Our faculty will also bring insights to neurologic diseases in special populations and nuances in the diagnosis, management, and care in these situations. The conference concludes with updates in Parkinson's management and the role of functional and stereotactic surgery in care of patients with Parkinson's.

The conference will have a hybrid format to facilitate both in-person and remote learning. Where possible, we encourage in-person attendance for learning and camaraderie.

Teaching methods include lecture, case presentations and case discussions with the audience response system

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of early diagnosis of cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease
  2. Discuss updated guidelines for acute ischemic stroke management, and prevention strategies for recurrent ischemic strokes
  3. Differentiate between provoked and unprovoked seizures and describe the risk of recurrence
  4. Recognize common symptoms, clinical course and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis
  5. Recognize sex differences in common neurological disorders and neurologic care in special populations
  6. Review calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) targeted migraine treatments and management of trigeminal neuralgia
  7. Discuss geropsychiatric symptoms of memory disorders
  8. Recognize early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, especially in special populations
  9. Identify candidacy, and increase awareness of complications or contraindications pre and post stereotactic neurosurgery
