Clinicians care for diverse patient populations whose physical and mental health and access to healthcare is differentially impacted by their race, sex, language, literacy, socioeconomic status, environmental exposures, and other unique factors. Our healthcare teams are similarly impacted by these factors.

Ethnic minorities and patients of color experience widespread racism and discrimination in many aspects of life including housing, employment, and health care. A significant body of literature on the role of structural and systemic racism and discrimination continues to be published in the areas of health and well-being. To address these issues, many non-profit and corporate organizations and institutions are developing anti-racism policies to reduce discrimination. While progress continues, there are many institutions and individuals without a systems-based process in place to make the changes. The challenge is further compounded when many people do not share the same definitions or understanding of these issues.

This course is designed to move beyond dialogue on bias, racism and discrimination towards understanding what steps can be taken to improve the care of our diverse patient populations.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty and panel discussions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review the evidence-based approaches to creating structural gender equity for women in healthcare
  2. Define key terms including racism, discrimination and systemic bias
  3. Provide tools for healthcare works to improve trust-building with historically marginalized patient communities
  4. Discuss community-based strategies to advance equity in cardiovascular care and beyond
  5. Review the role of formalized mentor programs and how they can improve mental health and program cohesion
  6. Outline social determinants of health and cultural factors that might impact care for domestic violence survivors
  7. Evaluate different forms of racism and the role of the minority tax in healthcare workers
  8. Identify barriers to reproductive and sexual healthcare for women and LGBTQIA+ patients
