Overview

Join faculty experts from the Center for Digestive Health at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health for this half-day course on the latest evidence-based diagnosis and management strategies for gastrointestinal and liver disorders, designed for clinicians caring for patients in the primary care setting.  

Topics will address clinical challenges commonly seen in primary care, including diagnosis and treatment of chronic constipation and pelvic floor dysfunction, liver dysfunction, food allergies and esophageal eosinophilia, advancing therapies for inflammatory bowel disease, treatment and diagnosis of irritable bowel disorder and other functional gastrointestinal diseases, and the role of GI providers in the management of bariatric surgery patients.

Teaching methods include lecture and Q&A with faculty.



Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Assess the components of liver function tests and recognize abnormal patterns of liver tests and the associated liver diseases
  2. Review the epidemiology of H pylori infection in Washington state to identify high risk groups and discuss the indications to test for and treat H pylori infection
  3. Develop a long-term management plan for esophageal eosinophilia, based on symptoms and etiologies
  4. Review therapies recently approved for IBD, including the surveillance recommended for and complications related to these therapies
  5. Summarize the role of GI providers in bariatrics and obesity medicine
  6. Describe the role of defecography in surgical decision-making for rectoceles
  7. Evaluate the efficacy of colonoscopy in colorectal cancer surveillance for Lynch syndrome
  8. Discuss the long-term safety profile of PPI (proton pump inhibitor)
