CNE: Patient Education Workshop, Dec. 11, 2019

Explore strategies and tools to educate your patients!! This workshop will discuss patient education techniques and strategies useful to nurses in any inpatient or ambulatory setting.   Join your nursing colleagues to explore the principles of assessing readiness to learn and conducting patient education. A highlight will be how health literacy and health numeracy impact your patient’s understanding. This workshop will feature a new method of discharge teaching called EDUCATE that includes tools and resources to guide discharge teaching that impacts patient self-care from admission to home and beyond. The last presentation topic for the workshop will include practical tips on using interpreter and language services available at Virginia Mason.

1. Discuss one benefit of using the teach-back patient education strategy.
2. Explain the process for conducting a learning styles assessment.
3. Identify 2 numeracy skills needed to successfully navigate the healthcare system.
4. Describe 2 strategies for communicating numerical information clearly and effectively.
5. Identify 2-3 strategies for conducting patient education on specific topics including skills, chronic disease management, and medications.
6. Define the mnemonic EDUCATE and how it guides discharge planning at Virginia Mason.
7. Demonstrate how to input CareNote instructions into patients electronic discharge packet.
8. Describe two resources available at Virginia Mason to assist with interpretation when teaching patients with limited English proficiency.

Virginia Mason is a provider of continuing education contact hours. Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # CEP15905 for 3.75 Contact Hours. RN contact hour certificates must be retained by the licensee/attendee for a period of 4 years after the course ends.

Parking: Parking is not included with registration. Virginia Mason's downtown parking facilities are limited and reserved for patients, therefore we offer this map of public lots with walking routes to the Lindeman Pavilion.
