Overview

Online preregistration is closed. Space is still available and attendees may register on site starting at 7:00 a.m.  For questions contact the Virginia Mason CME department at (206) 341-0142.

This half day of otology and otolaryngology lectures will delve into topics of interest to the practicing physician. The day begins with a thorough review of approaches to managing Meniere’s disease, vestibular schwannoma, and Eustachian tube dysfunction. There will also be information about medical malpractice in otology. An expert panel discussion on dizziness and vertigo will examine challenging cases that one might actually encounter.

The second portion of the course will focus on pediatric otolaryngology. Lectures will cover pain management after tonsillectomy, management of neck masses, new information related to the work up of hearing loss and best practices in managing otitis media including reference to current clinical practice guidelines. This half-day course is included with enrollment in the Temporal Bone Lab.

Target audience: This course is appropriate for otologists, otolaryngologists, fellows in training, residents and all clinicians with an interest in otolaryngology.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Assess the utility and efficacy of medical treatment of Meniere’s disease symptoms.
  2. Review indications for Eustachian tube balloon dilation and how to assess for risk of complications.
  3. Discuss prognostic factors helpful in predicting growth patterns of incidental vestibular schwannomas.
  4. Describe the most frequently litigated allegations in otologic surgery and how risk may be mitigated in a lawsuit.
  5. Select the best work up for patients with vertigo.
  6. Summarize the risk and benefits of opioid-free tonsillectomy in children.
  7. Identify clinical history and exam findings of malignant pediatric neck masses.
  8. Discuss the available options for both hearing and psychosocial habilitation in children with unilateral hearing loss.
  9. Apply the best evidence for managing acute and chronic otitis media and children.
