Current Management Techniques in Otology and Otolaryngology is a half day course and will have two main areas of focus. The morning lectures cover current topics in otology and will include management of the complex mastoid bowl, strategies for managing superior canal dehiscence syndrome, timing considerations in the treatment of sudden hearing loss and basic principles for successful tympanoplasty and ossiculplasty. There will also be a discussion of complicated otologic cases loosely based on the lecture topics.

The second portion of the course will address topics in facial plastics and will cover techniques for managing septal perforations, how to choose the most appropriate brow lift technique for your patient and techniques for nasal mid vault reconstruction. The day will close with an expert panel discuss on managing facial paralysis.

Target audience: This course is appropriate for otologists, otolaryngologists, fellows in training, residents, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Cite factors that lead to challenges in managing mastoid bowl problems
  2. Assess the different management strategies for superior canal dehiscence syndrome and their advantages and disadvantages
  3. Discuss the timing to initiate treatments for oral and transtympanic therapy for sudden hearing loss
  4. Recognize various techniques that can be used to treat perforations and conductive losses
  5. Describe atypical presentations of cholesteatoma
  6. Apply basic principles in non surgical management of septal perforations
  7. Determine which patients need upper blepharoplasty, which need brow lift, and which need both
  8. Describe techniques for nasal mid vault reconstruction
  9. Summarize the options for early and late intervention of facial nerve injury
