The Virginia Mason Surgical Association meeting takes place in Seattle at Virginia Mason on Friday and Saturday, September 23-24, 2016.

The meeting begins at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23 with a buffet breakfast adjacent to the Volney Richmond Auditorium in the Virginia Mason Lindeman Pavilion. At 7:30 a.m. Dr. Richard Thirlby will present "The Top 10 Reasons Why General Surgery is a Great Career" as the 4th Annual John A. Ryan Jr. Lecturer in Surgery. Dr. Thirlby's talk will be followed by Dr. Bob Sawin's (Chief of Surgery at Seattle Children's Hospital) address, "A Surgeon's Reflections on Love."  We think your spouse, partner, or guest will really enjoy these two presentations, after which our group will be transferred by bus to the new Seattle Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) in Lake Union Park for a tour and presentation.

During the Friday afternoon and Saturday programs Dr. Thirlby will be honored for his academic achievements and educational leadership with a festschrift from his published co-authors (alumni of the VM residency program in surgery.) Dr. Mondo Raker will also be honored with a vascular surgical symposium as he is retiring after 34 years at VM. Mondo's address is entitled "Evolution of Vascular Surgery at VM as Seen Through My Drawings."

Other invited lecturers include Dr. Andy Ross (section head of Gastroenterology at VM), Dr. Bill Traverso, Dr. Tabetha Bradley VM '12, Dr. Larry Moss VM '91, Dr. Tim Kingston VM '80, Dr. Morrie Johnson VM '87, and Dr. Ravi Moonka VM '95.  The "best case of the year" and the "worst case of the year" contests, HPB and Thoracic Symposiums and Endocrine lectures as well has academic presentations by current surgical residents will be fun parts of the program.  And there will be much, much more. The final program will be emailed later in the summer.

We will have a celebratory dinner on Saturday, September 24 at the Pacific Tower with spectacular views of the Seattle skyline. Your spouse or guest is invited to the entire meeting and of course the dinner. Mr. Leonard Garfield, Executive Director of Seattle's Museum of History and Industry will give an historical presentation.

We look forward to seeing you in September. Please contact Mary Paul Stewart of VM Continuing Medical Education if she may assist you in registering. Call (206) 341-0567 or email [email protected]
