Overview
Prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States is strikingly high at 14.2%, representing over 30 million US residents; half of whom have moderate (CKD stage III) to severe (CKD stage IV) disease. Diabetes and hypertension together account for over 75% of cases of end-stage kidney disease in the United States, and prevalence for these risk factors is also high, with hypertension in US adults at almost 50%, and diabetes nearing 9%. Today, in the USA over half a million patients are on dialysis - there are currently 25,000 kidney transplants performed each year, yet more than 100,000 remain on the kidney transplant waiting list.

Addressing the challenge of CKD will require earlier recognition and management of the risk factors leading to kidney disease, along with vigilant management of patients with chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and kidney transplants. This course is designed to address this need and support clinicians who care for patients diagnosed with or at risk of developing CKD. Topics include management of diabetes, metabolic bone disease, and hyponatremia in patients with chronic kidney disease; overview of dialysis, evaluation of acute kidney injury updates in kidney transplantation, medications to delay CKD progression, and important contraindications for contrast dyes in the CKD patient.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, and case presentations.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Indicate the significant steps for a patient with chronic kidney disease to get a kidney transplant
  2. Recognize when it is necessary to refer a patient with chronic kidney disease to subspecialty care
  3. Discuss how and when to prescribe medications to prevent the progression of chronic kidney disease
  4. Explain how chronic kidney disease and kidney transplant effect the management of diabetes mellitus (DM)
  5. Identify patients with acute kidney injury in the primary care setting
  6. Summarize the fundamentals of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
  7. Outline the latest criteria used for ordering iodinated contrast and gadolinium in the chronic kidney disease population
  8. Describe approach to the management of hyponatremia in the outpatient setting
  9. Discuss workup of metabolic bone disease in the chronic kidney disease population
  10. Explain how to incorporate palliative care into the management of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
