Overview

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is a recognized leader across the spectrum of colorectal cancer care. This symposium aims to present important considerations in individualizing care across the cancer care continuum. Topics include unique risk factors in IBD, young patients, genetic conditions, and changes in the clinical trial foci for rectal cancer, focusing on de-escalating multimodality treatment. Our midday session will delve into important contemporary debates on the implications of current clinical trials, and an application in a multidisciplinary tumor board context. Lastly, we will focus on metastatic and locally advanced colorectal cancer, proposing multidisciplinary strategies that offer the best chance of survival.

The overall objective of the course is to demonstrate the benefits of contemporary, personalized care — nuanced decision making, latest trials, and individualized care as offered at a Center of Excellence.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, case presentation and case discussion.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize barriers to colorectal cancer screening and prevention
  2. Explain current practices for dysplasia surveillance in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  3. Identify the risk factors for colorectal cancer in the young
  4. Discuss current challenges with trimodality therapy
  5. Review indications for radiotherapy in rectal cancer and review guidelines
  6. Recommend new alternative strategies to non-operative management in rectal cancer treatment
  7. Define the technique for and limitations of endoscopic resection of early colorectal cancer
  8. Summarize the work up of a patient with suspected colorectal liver metastases (CRLM)
  9. Describe characteristics of candidates for pulmonary metastasectomy in colorectal cancer
  10. Discuss the cancer genetics that increase risk of colon and gynecologic cancer and know when hysterectomy and or oophorectomy may be warranted as part of cancer care
  11. Review multi-disciplinary minimally invasive resection and reconstruction approaches to locally advanced colorectal cancer
