Overview

Online preregistration is closed. Limited overflow space will be available and attendees may register on site starting at 7:00 a.m. For directions contact the Virginia Mason CME department at (206) 341-0142.

This conference offers the opportunity to learn from stroke experts on how you can provide fast, efficient, comprehensive and innovative care to those with sudden onset of stroke symptoms. Caring for the stroke patient population requires quick assessment, transport to an appropriate facility and immediate intervention to ensure the best patient outcomes. Working as a team and looking at each step in the path of a stroke patient — from their living room to the hospital bed — is essential. Technology and new medical evidence is guiding our goals of care to prioritize early intervention to decrease disability and mortality in those suffering from stroke. From EMS first responders to inpatient care teams, this course will highlight the vital role each member plays in providing state of the art stroke care to the patients of our community.

Teaching methods include lectures, case presentation, panel discussion, simulation and patient experience.

Target audience: This course is appropriate for physicians, residents, and advanced practice providers who specialize in emergency medicine, hospital medicine, internal medicine, neuro-critical care, neurology and radiology. This course will also be of interest to nurses and emergency medical service providers including EMTs, firefighters and paramedics.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review recent endovascular treatment trials and summarize key results
  2. Consider stroke from the perspective of a stroke survivor and how care affects the patient experience
  3. Summarize potential challenges in determining appropriate level of care for a possible stroke patient
  4. Determine when and how to expedite a patient to comprehensive stroke care
  5. Discuss how triage tools can help predict large vessel occlusions
  6. Describe the importance of door-to-needle time and the care needed in the first 24 hours post tPA administration
  7. Relate different minimally invasive techniques for removing clots and securing cerebral aneurysms
  8. Explain how advances in radiology technology are changing the way we care for the stroke patient
  9. Evaluate the role of appropriate technology to improve the speed and efficiency of treatment — from EMS to the ED to definitive care
  10. Assess opportunities for collaboration with other healthcare providers to improve care of patients in your community
