Overview

Interstitial Lung Disease Update: What’s New in PFTs, CT-ILD, and the Management of ILD offers a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Over the past decade, rapid advancements in diagnostics and therapeutics have fundamentally transformed the management of ILD, replacing clinical nihilism with a proactive, evidence-based approach. This course is designed to empower clinicians to navigate these advancements, bridge the gap between initial presentation and specialized care, and manage the complex burden ILD places on patients and their support systems.

Through expert-led didactic sessions, interactive panel discussions, and nuanced case presentations, participants will gain practical strategies for:

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Integrating the latest in CT imaging interpretation, autoimmune testing, and the role of interventional bronchoscopy and cryobiopsy.

  • Clinical Identification: Mastering the "alphabet soup" of interstitial pneumonias, identifying occupational exposures—including emerging trends in Washington State—and recognizing ILD in special populations, such as those with myositis, familial history, or sarcoidosis.

  • Pharmacologic & Supportive Care: Understanding current anti-fibrotic therapies, managing complex side-effect profiles, and effectively utilizing pulmonary rehabilitation.

  • Holistic Management: Navigating the intersection of symptom control, palliative care, and end-of-life planning to improve quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.

This activity is intended for pulmonologists, primary care providers, rheumatologists, advanced practice providers, and the wider healthcare team seeking to move beyond nihilism toward evidence-based, patient-centered care. By bridging the knowledge gap between specialty diagnostics and primary care management, this course provides the tools necessary to confidently identify, treat, and support patients living with ILD. Attendees will engage with faculty through real-time audience response systems and interactive Q&A, ensuring that clinical questions are addressed with the depth and urgency required for today’s practice.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe how diagnostic practices in fibrotic lung disease have changed over time, with emphasis on multidisciplinary discussion
  2. Highlight patient populations who may benefit from chest CT screening for ILAs
  3. Summarize the changes in the classification of interstitial pneumonias and how they align with clinical and pathologic findings
  4. Review differential diagnoses of connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung disease
  5. Discuss the importance of pulmonary function tests (PFTs)
  6. Recognize the clinical presentation and management strategies for checkpoint pneumonitis
  7. Discuss changes in recommendations regarding corticosteroid use for sarcoidosis
  8. Identify appropriate approaches to assessing health young individuals with a family history of ILD
  9. Review the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation and its impact on outcomes in ILD
  10. Increase awareness of the benefits of the anti-fibrotic medications pirfenidone, nintedanib, and nerandomilast
