Overview

Online preregistration is closed. For questions contact the Virginia Mason CME department at (206) 341-0142.

All clinicians face ethical issues when navigating treatments for patients. An
increased number of patients present with compromised capacity in the setting of
prognostic uncertainty, and clinicians have few tools to help sort through these
complex aliments with their patients and families. This educational day offers some
practical approaches to some of the common ethical questions clinicians face,
including:

  • How should we help a patient plan when a new diagnosis of dementia is given?
  • How do clinicians decide what treatments to offer patients?
  • Should evidence-based practice override a patient’s request to take risks?
  • Should we coerce a patient who lacks capacity to participate in a treatment or
    transition to a new residence?
  • How do we help a patient’s family navigate treatments when the outcome is
    uncertain?

Teaching methods include lecture, panel discussion, case presentation, small
group breakout sessions, patient experience, audience response system and Q&A
with faculty.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify ethical values at stake in complex neurological cases that contain high levels of uncertainty in diagnosis or prognosis
  2. Identify common terms in health care ethics
  3. Discuss circumstances in which decision-making capacity should be considered, and apply the core elements of capacity to a clinical situation
  4. Explain the concept of “shared decision-making” and its variable definition for patients vs. providers
  5. Discuss the options for advance care planning which are most useful for dementia

Registration
Tuition: $165.00
