Overview

This comprehensive course delves into the multifaceted aspects of patient-centered care for pelvic floor disorders. It is designed for healthcare providers across diverse specialties and offers a deep exploration of various conditions affecting the pelvic floor, with a focus on evidence-based management strategies and patient-centered approaches.

Join faculty experts from Virginia Mason as they cover topics on overactive bladder and urgency urinary incontinence, menopause and pelvic health, abnormal bowel habits, pelvic floor dysfunction, bloating, fibroid treatment options, and surgical approaches and considerations. This course will also address the role of acupuncture, pelvic floor physical therapy and trauma-informed care in treatment approaches.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, panel discussion, and case presentations.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the patient perspective on urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, recurrent urinary tract infections, the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and pelvic organ prolapse
  2. Identify early definitive treatment options for the symptomatic young patient
  3. Describe treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) and urge urinary incontinence (UUI)
  4. List current options for surgical management of urinary incontinence
  5. Review the diagnosis and symptoms associated with pelvic organ prolapse
  6. Utilize at least three techniques from evidence-based interventions to support a traumatized client
  7. Explain differences between abdominal and perineal operations to prolapse
  8. Summarize the treatment algorithm for obstructive defecation
  9. Analyze high yield signs and symptoms to direct workup and treatment of common male pelvic conditions
  10. Discuss strategies to help clinicians gain pertinent information during a patient interview about change in bowel habits and pelvic floor dysfunction
  11. Describe the process of developing measurable, patient centered goals in pelvic floor PT
  12. Recommend acupuncture proposed mechanisms of action for pelvic floor conditions
  13. Identify diet and lifestyle factors that may contribute to exogenous gas and discuss common remedies
  14. Determine ideal candidates for hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  15. Compare and contrast the different uterine-sparing fibroid treatments available
  16. Review historical patterns for oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy
