Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is a recognized leader across the spectrum of colorectal cancer care. This symposium aims to present the latest updates in the field, for an audience that spans the cancer care continuum.

This course will cover broad categories of learning, which include disparities and high-value screening controversies, personalization management of advanced disease, and cancer prevention. Attendees will review indications for long-course versus short-course radiation, neo-adjuvant therapy and surgery. Screening, surgical and multi-modality trials will also be highlighted.

The overall objective of the course is to demonstrate the benefits of contemporary, personalized care — nuanced decision making, the latest trials and individualized care as offered at a Center of Excellence.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, case presentation and case discussion with an audience response system.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the next steps toward implementation of anal cancer prevention in high-risk groups
  2. Summarize changes in colon cancer screening recommendations
  3. Recognize hereditary cancer syndromes with a high penetrance for developing colorectal cancer
  4. Describe how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted screening, surgery, and adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer
  5. Compare functional outcomes between organ preservation and surgery
  6. Identify conditions in which surgeons would perform prophylactic colectomy
  7. Review selection criteria for “short course” versus “long course” neoadjuvant preoperative radiation
  8. Discuss strategies that address what matters most to people facing colon and rectal cancer
  9. Summarize the update on tailoring treatment on molecular profile
  10. Recognize the psychosocial impact of colorectal cancer on patients
