Overview

Online preregistration is closed. For questions contact the Virginia Mason CME department at (206) 341-0142.

The Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Update in Otology and Otolaryngology – A Virtual Experience provides a unique opportunity for otolaryngologists, advanced practitioners, and otolaryngology trainees to increase their knowledge and competence in the work-up and surgical care of otologic diseases, as well as to explore a variety of other topics within the field. Due to continuing precautions on in-person gatherings, this full day course will be presented online via livestream.

The morning begins with live on-line observation of otologic surgery performed by a Virginia Mason Franciscan Health otologist. Two procedures will be completed and during these procedures, you will hear from the surgeon and have the ability to interact with the MD facilitator who will address your questions in real time.

The afternoon online lectures will feature both local and national experts in their fields. The afternoon begins with information on the management of thyroid cancer according to the most recent guideline recommendations, followed by a review on the treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, approaches to anterior skull base reconstruction, and a review of the diagnosis and management of cholesteatoma. This afternoon will include a review on functional rhinoplasty, treatment options for conductive hearing loss, management of vestibular migraine from a neurologist’s viewpoint, and will close with a discussion about upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction with a laryngologist.

Teaching methods include surgical observation, lectures, and questions and answers with faculty.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the rising incidence of thyroid cancer in the US
  2. Discuss a practical approach to the use of drug-induced sleep endoscopy in children
  3. Review the pathophysiology of nasal obstruction and how to identify common causes in the history and physical exam
  4. Describe the variations in skull base defects and factors related to reconstruction choices including size, location, and intracranial pressure
  5. Formulate a workable differential diagnosis for causes of conductive hearing loss
  6. Identify the spectrum of migraine associated vertigo or vestibular migraines
  7. Discuss the pathogenesis of cholesteatoma
  8. Identify appropriate application of surgical and non-surgical approaches to Upper Esophageal Sphincter (UES) dysfunction
