Overview

Online preregistration is closed. For questions email the Virginia Mason CME department at [email protected].

Care of the diverse LGBTQIA+ patient population has become a growing focus of medical school and residency education curriculums, while practicing clinicians outside of training programs have few opportunities for education on critical topics in the care of this population. This course aims to address this gap at a pressing time as a growing body of literature indicates significant differences in treatments offered to LGBTQIA+ patients and differences in incidence and prevalence of many medical conditions — including substance use, depression, body dysmorphia, and suicide.

This course will address specific aspects of care for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex, and transgender population. We will review the epidemiology of diseases that afflict these populations, details on medical and surgical options for transgender patients, infectious disease update, and ethical considerations in the care of LGBTQIA+ patients.

Our target audience includes physicians, allied healthcare professionals and social workers within a number of clinical disciplines, indeed the intention is to highlight practice improvement which incorporate critical change elements of use across specialty and group. Teaching methods include lectures, Q&A with faculty and panel discussions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Synthesize strategies to support gender-expansive youth through best practices and advocacy
  2. Summarize surgical interventions to treat gender dysphoria and discuss the impact of treatment on psychological health and quality of life
  3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in patients and actively avoid re-traumatization
  4. Apply identification, testing, treatment and prevention strategies for infectious agents beyond HIV impacting the LGBTQIA+ community
  5. Review anal cancer etiology, incidence and at-risk populations, and determine when to recommend screening
  6. Explore the obligations to expand primary care access to LGBTQAI+ patients, and unpack the Ethical and Religious Directives in the primary care of these patients
  7. Describe disparities with PrEP prescribing, and assess ways of broadening access to PrEP
