About Joel W. Baker, MD (1905-1999)

Dr. Joel W. Baker was born in Shenandoah, Va. in 1905. The son of a railroad switchman and his wife, as a boy he accompanied his physician uncle on calls in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and decided early on medicine. He earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha in 1928. He came to Seattle to intern at Virginia Mason Hospital, and began his surgical training under Dr. Tate Mason in 1929.

Dr. Baker was deeply involved in the life of the Virginia Mason organization throughout his career. He served as chief of surgery from 1936-1970, and was chairman of the Mason Clinic from 1945 to 1964. In the 1950s, Dr. Baker developed a procedure to drain an obstructed intestine of toxic matter, where cutting could expose a patient to contamination. Instead, he inserted a long decompression tube. He also designed a surgical technique that in some cases averted the need for colostomy.

Most of Baker's impact on Virginia Mason came during his physician emeritus years. He was unanimously elected to the Advisory Board of the Virginia Mason Research Center in 1983 and sat on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Mason Medical Foundation throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The Joel W. Baker Lecture in Surgery held its first series in 1988, coinciding with the dedication of the hospital's surgery lounge to Dr. Baker.
