Overview

Healthcare of today focuses on safety. This course explores the ethical lens of physical, emotional and psychological safety, and what it can mean in the context of patient care. We unpack our obligations in conversations prone to nudging, and explore tensions between safety at the bedside, patient centered care and our justice and social support systems. A panel will discuss the tension in obligations to our patients and ourselves during a disaster, like an active shooter incident, and explore the concern of abandonment.

The case presentations will include small group breakout sessions followed by large group debriefs. The small groups will be facilitated by Bioethics Committee members and will invite patient family partners to join the discussions. Participants will gain hands-on experiences as they think through cases and leave with practical tools to apply in their everyday patient care encounters.

Teaching methods include lecture, Q&A with faculty, panel discussions, case presentations, case discussions with Audience Response System, small group discussions, simulation and the voice of the patient.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate levels of influence and force, from nudging to coercion
  2. Discuss the implications and approach to leaving patients during a hospital disaster
  3. Evaluate safety concerns in patients without decision making capacity
  4. Integrate practical strategies to restore safety at the bedside
  5. Describe the role of a mandatory reporter and the processes of Adult Protective Services
