Overview
The Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Update in Otology and Otolaryngology – A Virtual Experience provides a unique opportunity for otolaryngologists, advanced practitioners, and otolaryngology trainees to increase their knowledge and competence in the work-up and surgical care of otologic diseases, as well as to explore a variety of other topics within the field. Due to ongoing restrictions for large in-person gatherings this full-day course will be presented online via livestream.

The morning begins with live on-line observation of otologic surgery performed by one of Virginia Mason’s otologists. Two procedures will be completed. During these procedures, attendees will hear from the surgeon real-time and have an opportunity to interact with an additional MD facilitator who will address audience questions and provide commentary on the surgical techniques.

The afternoon online lectures will feature both local and national experts in their fields. The afternoon begins with an update on the management of oral cavity dysplasia and carcinoma according to the most recent evidence-based recommendations, followed by a review on the treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, approaches to anterior skull base reconstruction, and a review of the diagnosis and management of cholesteatoma. We will close out the day with a review on functional rhinoplasty, treatment options for conductive hearing loss, management of vestibular migraine from a neurologist’s viewpoint, and will close with a discussion about upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction with a laryngologist.

Teaching methods include surgical observation, lectures and questions and answers with faculty.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review current, evidence-based medicine guidelines for treatment of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma
  2. Summarize the various treatment options for children with voice disorders
  3. Discuss options for management of the recurrent or recalcitrant polyp patient including revision surgery, implantable steroids, and biological medications
  4. Discuss how machine learning can be used to predict outcomes following cochlear implant surgery
  5. Describe the various methods for local flap reconstruction for facial defects following malignancy excision
  6. Outline the socioecological model as a multi-level framework to guide interventions to mitigate disparities
  7. Explain the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive dysfunction
  8. Review and compare outcomes with surgery and radiation therapy in the management of early-stage glottic cancer

Registration
Online registration will be open through Wednesday, November 2,  2022.
Tuition: $100
